WATER SAFETY

Could This be You?

"Forty people had to be rescued from the River Thames after severe weather struck during a boat race.
At least two people, one with severe hypothermia, have been taken to hospital for treatment." (BBC News 21Mar04)

By agreeing to row with Monarch Rowing Club without wearing a bouyancy aid you confirm that you can swim 50 meters in light clothing and tread water for two minutes. Coxes will wear bouyancy aids at all times on the water

Coxes or Steersmen will ensure that the boat carries a whistle securely fastened by lanyard, and one survival blanket per crew member. The location of nearest land based rescue aids must be ascertained before boating. (Phone? First Aid kit? Rescue Lines? etc).
Local navigation rules must also be checked, in particular for hazards and circulation direction.

GOLDEN RULE in the event of capsize: Stay with the boat, summon assistance, and get your body out of the water as soon as possible.
